Melbourne Small Farmers & Growers Group

A pilot project by KABUU.
We are in the early stages of setting up a Melbourne Small Farmers & Growers Group. Initially we'll focus on developing a Bulk Order Program to help small farmers and growers purchase inputs together in bulk (e.g. seeds, drip tape, soil ammendments). Collective buying power can help small farmers and small growers access more products at affordable prices. We will explore volunteering as a way to strengthen community and help members save money - everyone chips in a little work for the benefit of the whole group.

Project Timeline

April - July 2020
  1. Survey local farmers to identify needs.
  2. Contact suppliers for pricing.
  3. Create catalogue of common products/inputs.
July - August 2020
  1. Launch Bulk Order Program.
  2. Collect feedback.

Benefits for farmers

Farmers operate on tight margins. Purchasing agricultural inputs for small farms can involve disproportionately large upfront costs. Collective buying saves money and resources.

Advantages for small farmers:
  • Access to varieties bred for organic agriculture
  • Less storage space required
  • Save on financial outlay
  • Reduced wastage
  • Strengthen relationships between farmers
